Overview

The KB Electronics KBDF Series is a compact digital AC drive built around CSP (Common Sense Programming), an interface that organises parameters into intuitive groups so the drive can be commissioned without requiring specialist programming experience. Housed in a compact IP20 enclosure, the KBDF is suited to panel-mount installations where a smaller footprint is needed alongside full programmability and an expanded set of inputs and outputs.

The KBDF range covers thirteen models across single and three-phase input configurations, from the entry-level KBDF-13 (0.5 HP, 115 VAC single-phase) through to the KBDF-48 (5 HP, 460 VAC three-phase). Models are available with 115 VAC, 115/230 VAC, 230 VAC and 460 VAC supply options, in both single and three-phase configurations, with most models available with an “F” suffix for a built-in Class A (CE) RFI/EMI AC line filter.

Key Features

The KBDF Series uses sensorless flux vector control with static auto-tune to provide strong speed regulation and smooth motor torque across the full speed range, with automatic energy saving at light loads. An ultra bright digital display with LED status indicators shows drive frequency, direction, mode and fault conditions, and a built-in potentiometer sets motor speed in lieu of the keypad.

The drive is GFCI compatible, with proprietary software that prevents GFCI circuit breakers and outlets from tripping when enabled via the program function. Local/Remote operation allows the drive to switch from process control to manual control if a process fault occurs. The KBDF provides an expanded set of inputs and outputs for process and automation integration: seven isolated multi-function inputs with sink or source mode control logic, two analog inputs, two multi-function output relays and one analog output.

Electronic Inrush Current Limit (EICL) protection eliminates harmful inrush current at power up, while ride-through provides smooth recovery to the previous set speed after a momentary power loss. Protective features include undervoltage and overvoltage protection, short circuit protection at the motor, stalled motor trip protection, and regeneration protection to prevent nuisance tripping caused by rapid deceleration of high inertial loads, with regenerative DC injection braking programmable via the keypad.

Drive Options

A range of drive options can be added to the KBDF Series. The Memory Module can store up to four programs for cloning and archiving, in addition to the four programs the drive itself can store. The IODF input/output multi-function expansion module adds up to 5 points of additional I/O. The Drive-Link programming kit allows the drive to be configured from a PC, and a Modbus serial communication module is available for network connectivity.

Customisation For OEMs

KB Electronics can work with OEMs to provide a custom KBDF drive solution that is ready to use “out-of-the-box.” Customisation options include pre-calibrating or pre-programming a stock control, adding a custom label or branding, custom software, PLC functions or designing a new control.

Common Applications

The KBDF Series Digital AC Drive is used across a wide range of industrial applications, including conveyors, pumps, blowers, fans, packaging and food processing equipment, HVAC systems, machine tools, mixers, indexers, door and gate openers, dumbwaiters, and process or automation equipment that benefits from analog signal control, multi-function inputs/outputs or GFCI-compatible operation.

Selection Considerations

Selecting the correct KBDF model starts with confirming the available supply: single-phase or three-phase, and the supply voltage of 115, 230 or 460 VAC. From there, the required horsepower and output amperage determine the specific model within that voltage and phase configuration. If a built-in RFI/EMI line filter is required, the “F” suffix variant of the relevant model should be specified. Applications requiring process control integration should also consider the multi-function inputs/outputs and optional IODF expansion module, Modbus communication module or Drive-Link programming kit.

Motordrives Australia can help confirm the right KBDF model based on your motor’s horsepower, the available supply voltage and phase, and any process control or I/O requirements.
