Overview

The KB Electronics KBDA Series is a fully digital AC drive built around CSP (Common Sense Programming), an interface that organises parameters into intuitive groups so the drive can be commissioned without requiring specialist programming experience. The drive is housed in a rugged die-cast aluminium NEMA 4X / IP 65 enclosure with a hinged cover, suiting it to indoor or outdoor installation, including wash-down and more demanding environments.

The KBDA range spans eight models across single and three-phase input configurations: the KBDA-24D and KBDA-27D operate from a 115/230 VAC single-phase supply, the KBDA-29 is available in single-phase (1P) and three-phase 230 VAC versions, the KBDA-24P operates from a 230 VAC three-phase supply, and the KBDA-42, KBDA-45 and KBDA-48 operate from a 460 VAC three-phase supply. Horsepower ratings across the range run from 1/8 HP through to 5 HP, with all models delivering a three-phase output. Gray and white case finishes are available, with the white case carrying an FDA approved finish for food and washdown applications.

Key Features

The KBDA Series uses sensorless flux vector control with static auto-tune to provide strong speed regulation and smooth motor torque across the full speed range, with automatic energy saving at light loads. A digital display with LED status indicators shows drive frequency, direction, mode and fault conditions, and a built-in potentiometer provides a quick way to adjust motor speed directly at the drive.

Electronic Inrush Current Limit (EICL) protection eliminates harmful inrush current at power up, while ride-through provides smooth recovery to the previous set speed after a momentary power loss. The Jog-Local/Remote function sets the drive to jog mode or switches between local keypad and remote signal operation. Protective features include undervoltage and overvoltage protection, short circuit protection at the motor, stalled motor trip protection, and regeneration protection to prevent nuisance tripping caused by rapid deceleration of high inertial loads. A multi-function output relay can be used to signal equipment status, warnings or fault conditions, and the drive provides holding torque at zero speed to resist motor shaft rotation when stopped.

Drive Options

A range of drive options can be added to the KBDA Series. The IODA input/output multi-function board adds up to 17 points of additional I/O for integration with PLCs and other control systems. A Modbus serial communication module is available for network connectivity, and the Drive-Link programming kit allows the drive to be configured from a PC. An On/Off AC line switch can be added to disconnect the AC line, a Class A (CE) RFI filter can be installed inside the drive, and a liquidtight fittings kit is available for sealing drive wiring in wet or washdown environments.

Customisation For OEMs

KB Electronics can work with OEMs to provide a custom KBDA drive solution that is ready to use “out-of-the-box.” Customisation options include pre-calibrating or pre-programming a stock control, adding a custom label or branding, custom software, PLC functions or designing a new control. GFCI software allows the equipment to operate with Ground Fault Circuit Interruption breakers or outlets.

Common Applications

The KBDA Series Digital AC Drive is used across a wide range of industrial, indoor and outdoor applications, including conveyors, pumps, blowers, fans, packaging and food processing equipment, HVAC systems, machine tools, mixers, indexers, door and gate openers, dumbwaiters, and other equipment that benefits from programmable motor speed control, soft start torque and a washdown-capable enclosure.

Selection Considerations

Selecting the correct KBDA model starts with confirming the available supply: single-phase or three-phase, and the supply voltage of 115, 230 or 460 VAC. From there, the required horsepower and output amperage determine the specific model within that voltage and phase configuration. Where network communication, additional I/O or PC-based programming is required, the optional Modbus communication module, IODA board or Drive-Link kit should be considered as part of the specification. Installations in wet, outdoor or food-processing environments should also consider the white, FDA-approved case finish together with the optional liquidtight fittings kit.

Motordrives Australia can help confirm the right KBDA model based on your motor’s horsepower, the available supply voltage and phase, and the installation environment.
