Overview

The Transtecno TOR-N rotary limit switch gives you precise, repeatable control over the travel of industrial machines and automated farming equipment. It connects directly to a worm gearmotor via its input shaft, and after a set number of turns, internal cams actuate the microswitches to stop or reverse movement at exactly the right point.

If you are running poultry feeding lines, livestock ventilation systems or any mechanised process where equipment needs to move to a defined position and stop reliably, the TOR-N is built for the job. With IP66 protection as standard, it handles the demanding conditions found in Australian agricultural and industrial environments without issue.

The unit is available in two sizes. The TOR18N is a compact option fitted with contacts only, while the TOR36N adds an integrated potentiometer alongside the contacts for applications where you need to monitor shaft position as well as switch at set points.

Key Features

The TOR-N is designed around a robust aluminium housing and flange assembly that bolts directly onto Transtecno CM series worm gearboxes. A purpose built flange and shaft coupling means installation is straightforward, with no adapters or custom machining required for the CM030, CM040, CM050, CM063, CM070 and CM075 gearbox ranges.

Each unit comes standard with two contacts (1NC, 1NO), and can be configured with three or four contacts when you need to manage intermediate positions along the travel path. The TOR36N variant adds a potentiometer (available in 5 kOhm or 10 kOhm) that lets you quantify the rotation of the limit switch shaft across an actual electric angle of approximately 320 degrees.

Four cam profiles are available, each with a different operating angle to suit different inertia and stopping requirements. Profile A (20 degrees) is the standard option suited to most applications. Profiles B (45 degrees), C (90 degrees) and D (180 degrees) provide progressively wider operating angles for systems where higher inertia needs to be managed.

Every cam includes its own micrometric adjustment screw, so you can fine tune the switching point with a simple blade screwdriver once the unit is mounted.

Common Applications

The TOR-N rotary limit switch is widely used in poultry and livestock farming operations across Australia, particularly in automated feeding and environmental control systems.

Typical uses include controlling the opening and closing of flaps on feed distribution lines, managing the lifting and lowering of feeding troughs, and automating curtain and ventilation systems in poultry sheds. The combination of IP66 protection and a wide operating temperature range (from -20°C to +60°C) makes it well suited to the variable conditions found in Australian farming environments, from cool highland regions through to hot and humid coastal areas.

Beyond agricultural applications, the TOR-N is equally at home in general industrial settings where any motorised process requires accurate, repeatable end of travel switching on a worm gearmotor driven system.

Selection Considerations

Choosing the right TOR-N configuration starts with understanding your application requirements. There are a few key decisions to work through.

First, determine whether you need contacts only (TOR18N) or contacts with a potentiometer (TOR36N). If your control system simply needs to know when the mechanism has reached its end positions, contacts alone will do. If you also need proportional feedback on the position of the mechanism throughout its travel, the TOR36N with its integrated potentiometer is the right choice.

Next, select the reduction ratio. The TOR-N offers 17 ratio options ranging from 5:1 through to 740:1, allowing you to match the number of gearmotor output shaft turns to a single revolution of the limit switch cam. Getting this right ensures your switching points align accurately with the physical travel of the machine.

The cam profile is the third consideration. For most standard applications, Profile A with its 20 degree operating angle provides reliable switching. Where higher inertia loads are involved and you need a wider switching window, profiles B, C or D give you progressively larger angles to work with.

Finally, confirm the gearbox size and mounting position. The TOR-N is compatible with CM030 through to CM075 worm gearboxes, and offers three mounting orientations (Z1, Z2, Z3) to suit different installation layouts.

If you are unsure which combination is right for your setup, our team can walk you through the selection process based on your specific application.
